Why we don’t headline the 7.2¢ plans

76 of the 116 plans in Dallas use bill credits. The lowest, APGE SimpleSaver 9, takes $125 off any month you use 1,000 kWh or more. That makes it 7.2¢ at exactly 1,000 kWh, but 20.1¢ in a 500 kWh month. A flat plan costs about the same per kWh at any usage.

About Oncor in Dallas

Oncor is the transmission and distribution utility (TDU) for Dallas, on the ERCOT grid. It owns the power lines and meters, restores outages and reads your meter. Your retail provider sells the electricity itself.

Texas opened retail electricity to competition in 2002 under Senate Bill 7, overseen by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT). Oncor’s delivery charge is set by the PUCT and passed through at cost, so it is the same on every plan. The difference between plans is the energy charge and any base fee.

Questions

Dallas electricity questions

How do I compare electricity rates in Dallas?

Enter your ZIP code to see live plans from PUCT-licensed retail electric providers serving Dallas on the Oncor grid. Compare the full price per kWh at your own usage (500, 1,000 and 2,000 kWh are on every Electricity Facts Label), not the headline rate, and check the term length and cancellation fee before you sign.

What is the cheapest electricity plan in Dallas?

The lowest 12-month flat-rate plan in Dallas today is Discount Power Essential Saver 12 at 14.1¢ per kWh all-in at 1,000 kWh a month, about $141 a month with Oncor delivery included. Bill-credit plans show a lower number at exactly 1,000 kWh, but cost more in any month you use less than the credit threshold, so they suit homes that stay above it most of the year.

What is the average electricity rate in Dallas, Texas?

Texas homes pay an average of 15.9¢ per kWh (U.S. Energy Information Administration). The median 12-month flat-rate plan offered in Dallas today is 15.4¢ at 1,000 kWh.

Can I choose my electricity provider in Dallas?

Yes. Dallas is in Texas's deregulated market. 17 providers offer 116 plans in the Oncor area today. Oncor delivers the power; you pick the company that sells it to you.

How do I switch electricity providers in Dallas?

Compare plans with your ZIP code, choose one and sign up online. Your new provider handles the switch with Oncor, with no interruption in service. If you are in a contract, check your cancellation fee first; switching in the last 14 days of a contract has no fee.

What is Oncor and what does it do?

Oncor is the transmission and distribution utility (TDU) for Dallas. It owns the poles, wires and meters, restores outages and reads your meter. Its delivery charge is set by the PUCT and is the same on every plan.

Are there renewable energy plans in Dallas?

Yes. The lowest 100% renewable flat-rate plan today is Atlantex Power Luminous Green 12 at 15.2¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh.

What happens if I don't choose a provider in Dallas?

If your provider leaves the market, you are moved to a Provider of Last Resort (POLR), usually at a higher variable rate. New service at an address needs a provider before power is turned on.

How do I read my Dallas electricity bill?

Your bill has your provider's energy charge, any base charge, and Oncor's delivery charges ($4.06 a month plus 6.87¢ per kWh today), plus taxes. Most plans show one all-in price per kWh on the Electricity Facts Label.

How is Dallas different from Austin or San Antonio?

Austin and San Antonio are served by city-owned utilities (Austin Energy, CPS Energy) that set one rate for everyone, so residents there can't choose a provider. In Dallas, two neighbors can pay very different prices depending on the plan they picked.
